Application of Cemented Carbide

November 30,2022

As is known to all, cemented carbide materials are powder metallurgy products sintered in a vacuum furnace or hydrogen reduction furnace with carbide (WC, TiC) micron powder of high hardness refractory metals as the main component, cobalt (Co) or nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo) as the binder. What applications does it have in the professional field? Today, let's get to know.

Tool material

Carbide is used as tool material in a large number. It can be used to make turning tools, milling cutters, planers, drills, etc. Tungsten cobalt cemented carbide is suitable for short chip machining of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and machining of non-metallic materials.

Tungsten titanium cobalt cemented carbide materials are suitable for machining long chips of ferrous metals such as steel. Among similar alloys, those with more cobalt content are suitable for rough machining. While those with less cobalt content are suitable for finish machining. The processing life of general cemented carbide for stainless steel is much longer than that of others.

Mold material

Cemented carbide is mainly used as a cold drawing die, cold punching die, and other cold working die.

The common property of cemented carbide cold heading die is that it requires cemented carbide to have good impact resistance toughness, fracture toughness, fatigue strength, bending strength, and good wear resistance under the wear-resistant working condition of bearing impact or strong impact. Medium and high cobalt and medium and coarse grain alloy grades are usually selected.

In general, the relationship between wear resistance and toughness of cemented carbide is contradictory. The increase in wear resistance will lead to a decrease in toughness, and the increase in toughness will inevitably lead to a decrease in wear resistance.

Therefore, when selecting alloy grades, it is necessary to meet specific user requirements according to processing objects and processing conditions.

If the selected brand is prone to early cracking and damage in use, the brand with high toughness should be selected If the selected brand is easy to be damaged due to early wear in use, the brand with higher hardness and better wear resistance should be selected.

Measuring tools and wear-resistant parts

Cemented carbide is used for wearing surface inlay and parts of measuring tools, the precision bearing of grinder, guide plate and guide rod of centerless grinder, lathe center, and other wear-resistant parts.
